INTER-AMERICAN DEVELOPMENT BANK - THE PANORAMIC PHOTOGRAPHY IN THE CONTEMPORARY CONTEXT
Selected by the Inter-American Develovepment Bank Staff Association, Alberto Gandsas presented the exhibit "The Panoramic Photography in the Contemporary Art Context" at the Inter-American Bank (IDB) in Washington DC USA. April 19-30, 2004.
Photography can be considered as the quintessence of modern art, not only to its 160 years of existence, which coincides precisely with modernism as a cultural movement.
The camera, as well as other types of artistic expressions, also leads us to the road of looking, observing and communicating.
Considering this exact definition of photography as the basis of such art, I began traveling through Patagonia (Argentina) to capture its wide sceneries and horizons. I used a panoramic format camera which has special characteristics: a wide angle take with normal type lens (45 mm) that do not distort the scene as occurs with the traditional great angular lens.
The breathtaking sceneries of Patagonia immediately invited me to create the first panoramic works. Being a restless researcher of the panoramic format, I began entering the Contemporary Art Context using the panoramic ampleness as his instrument of expression
I do not introduce the main object or aim in the picture in an isolated manner but within its surrounding in order to situate the observer in the space of the place.
The panoramic format is essentially horizontal and precisely that horizon, created by the great angle of the panoramic camera, is what obliges to control and integrate the surroundings of the main object to be captured, be it in the center or on the sides of the picture, in the right time, light and space, in order to allow the observer to interpret the vision of a world or a picture in a different convergence.
When taking a picture of a landscape, the later was already created. It lies on the photographer’s vision to show the scenery from an absolutely personal angle.
In the Contemporary Art Context, the photographer shall assume the new creation because he will have to compose and create the picture starting form the elements he bears necessary and also making good use of the great horizontal space the panoramic format offers.
In the same fashion as the painter or the sculptor does, he is going to create a picture and shall become an artist.
For the photographic take, he (the photographer) shall investigate how to position the panoramic camera and the lens in such angles that very few photographers would dare to do so. In panoramic photography applied to Contemporary Art Context the aim is to find the balance of the empty space in the same way that in sculpture the aim is to find the balance of the spaces of the work.
This is how a bench in a square can acquire a different perspective when setting that same bench within a surrounding that medium or small format camera with a normal lens (45/50 mm) can not reach.
Movement, reflection and geometry, show how the panoramic camera and its wide angle insert perfectly in the Contemporary Art Context. |
